THE MINT (GERMANY)
  • Artist THE MINT (GERMANY)
  • Speaker

The thoroughbred European band know their stuff. Blending a massive electronic sound,
new wave guitar, subtle hook-lines and poetic lyrics that speak to the soul, THE MINT's
sound is hard to define or categorize; it just works.
THE MINT draw inspiration from their hometown, Berlin, and bring that to life with their
bittersweet, bold and sometimes melancholic music. Their songs speak of hope and sorrow,
grief and euphoria, in a self-described "Deutsch-International" sound. They pick up
where live electronic artists like Can and Kraftwerk left off.
On stage, the four artists intoxicate their fans with an avant-garde presence, delivering a
whirlwind of powerful songs and irresistibly rousing dance grooves, all the while remaining
    blatantly authentic.

BERNHARD EDER (AUSTRIA)
BERNHARD EDER (AUSTRIA)
  • Artist BERNHARD EDER (AUSTRIA)
  • Speaker

Bernhard Eder grew up in a little farming village in the Austrian countryside. After spending his youth on his mother's farm, he decided to become a car-mechanic, but soon realized that his love of music was much stronger than that for cars. After putting down his wrenches he formed a band called "wa:rum" with some friends and started playing at parties and small festivals in his region. In 1997, Bernhard decided to move to Vienna to study Audio Engineering.

Two years later, after finishing his studies in Audio Engineering, he began studying jazz vocals at the Vienna Conservatory. In the meantime he released three records with "wa:rum" and become popular on Austria's biggest alternative music radio station; FM4.

Together with his new band and a notebook full of new songs he recorded "Tales From The East Side". This masterfully produced and orchestrated album hums in a tone both modern and old, swaying in slow-motion between the perimeters of folk and indie and leaving the listener with a slight taste of Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and José Gonzales. Though his influences are apparent, Bernhard Eder has a voice all his own and uses those influences not as templets to shape himself with, but as fuel to propel his music in new and exciting directions.

Alternative pop act alibi tom from Gothenburg digs deeper with new album “this sleeping”. Their unique music, generated by colliding classical counterpoint compositions with jam-session improvisation, has been recorded live in old rural churches together with mentor and producer Joakim Sehlstedt. This made for a living, breathing pop sound, adorned with harmonies and unexpected instrumental elements. Let’s call it playful seriousness – or the concept of making music being intimate yet big, dramatic yet contemplative and melancholic yet “so beautiful you just don’t know what to do with yourself” –Anna Enkvist, Joyzine.se.

Management del Dolore Post-Operatorio were formed in 2006 and released the album "Mestruazioni” on the Videoradio label at the end of 2008. The first work was well-received in the music press. In the same year, the boys met Raffaella Tenaglia (Pixie Promotion) with which they started carrying out a strategy to promote music products and events through the new web technologies and unconventional marketing tricks (Videopin). Thanks to a dazzling impact during live shows, the four guys were chosen to open for major artists like Zen Circus, Nouvelle Vague, Echo & the Bunnymen, Bud Spencer Blues Explosion, Planet Funk, Marlene Kuntz, Diaframma, Gang of Four and Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti.

In just a few years the band won a lot of awards. The most important awards are: Italia Wave band 2009, Primo Maggio Tutto l’Anno Abruzzo 2009, fourth place in the Top 50 brands new MeiWeb with the single "Nei palazzi", special award MEI 2010 for "innovation technology applied to music" (Videopin by Pixie Promotion - the classic pin with a QR-code linked to the YouTube Channel's band) and finally the "Special Prize MArteLabel 2010" with the input the label on the roster. In June of 2011 they won the Bolzano Upload Festival, with Christian Godano (Marlene Kuntz) as president of the jury, who chose them for the Popkomm in Berlin. MADE DOPO has just recorded new album with the music producer Manuele Fusaroli (aka "Max Stirner"). It will be released in the Autumn of 2011.

CHARTER (GERMANY)
CHARTER (GERMANY)
  • Artist CHARTER (GERMANY)
  • Speaker

They are impulsive, stylish, straightforward. Charter stands for authentic, ecstatic rock – inspired by the different, strong characters of the four musicians. In their songs the Finnish way of life of frontman Antti mixes with Berlin´s vibrant creativity and an individual drive for freedom and an escape from simple life. Influenced by the greatness of bands like Placebo, U2 and The Killers, the band takes melodic-catchy indie pop-rock on stage. With tracks like “Impossible You”, “Trust” and “Girl” they deliver an energy-packed show leaving you with goose bumps.

As a newcomer band, the four musicians got together about a year ago. Frontman Antti who has worked as a songwriter in Dublin and London before, met Tilman in a bar. Burn and Thomas joined a few months later. Each one of them has his own musical background and was looking for something new. With Charter they are sharing their dream together. On numerous stages across the country, they've already enthused their audiences. As support for The Boxer Rebellion, they accompanied the German tour, convincing audiences and journalists alike at the Popkomm.

In the second year after forming the band, the John Fryer (Him, Depeche Mode) produced album “Impossible You” will hit the stores. An amazing debut of an expressive band!

DEER BEAR (DENMARK)
DEER BEAR (DENMARK)
  • Artist DEER BEAR (DENMARK)
  • Speaker

Complementarity is what best describes DEER BEAR. The Ying and Yang parallel is obvious with the members being an odd couple: The female part is held by Anne Hjort, with a background rooted in the electro-popish. Her male counterpart is Lars Bjørn-Hansen who normally fronts the acclaimed death metal band Koldborn. But there’s no death metal in this musical setting, no insisting aggression, no screaming.
Their sound and songwriting stand in an appealing contrast to modernity, and one may sense a search for a more traditional insight and organic output. The style might be labeled as melancholic pop-folk, and while the sound is warm and comforting, the subject matter is far from it.

  • Speaker

From the Austrian Alps to the United Kingdom, from Japan to Germany to Iceland and back through Europe, Clues is the debut album of self-styled noisepop cosmopolitan Bensh... and the sum of a six year expedition to some of the most ecclectic places in pop.

Born in Innsbruck, Austria, Bensh studied composition in the UK in 2004. After a period of extensive songwriting and subsequent recording sessions with Dan Swift (Snow Patrol, Art Brut) and Gordon Raphael (The Strokes), he embarked on a cultural exchange to Osaka, Japan. Since returning to Europe, Bensh lived and worked in Germany, UK, Austria and Iceland, where the final mix of Clues was completed with Biggi Birgisson (Sigur Rós). The track Doubt has received massive airplay in central Europe earlier this year, the new single How Come Nao is already receiving airplay in Austria and Germany.

On stage, Bensh is joined by virtuoso synth-wizard Sion Trefor from Cardiff/UK and Bensh’s multi-instrumentalist brother Sevo. After a number of shows in Austria and Germany the formation just brought their blend of catchy noise-pop to the US and Canada for the first time. Bensh’s debut Clues is out in several European territories this summer/fall, starting with a release in Austria on May 27th (Odd One In/Hoanzl) and the UK and Sweden and Germany on October 14, 2011, with Canada to follow in early 2012. The  three piece will tour extensively in the months ahead. Around the globe in thirteen songs. And this journey has clearly just begun.

Mati Zundel, born in the quiet countryside in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, has investigated different styles of Latin American folklore from argentine chacareras and vidalas all the way to Peruvian huaynos and Mexican sonideros. Shamanic chants, charango, guitar, and loops are the backbone of Mati's music. Native voices soar over delirious percussion and intense bass lines meet with melodies that combine cumbia and psychedelia. Mati Zundel composes songs that were once traditional but with the sonic engineering of the future are ideal for dance floors where he turns into a shaman under a sky covered in a storm of stars.

Electro-tribal malambos and glitch chacareras to IDM huaynos are some of the soundscapes that illustrate Tremor’s sound. In recent years Leo Martinelli, the man behind Tremor, has performed as a trio with Gerardo Farez on keys and melodica and Camilo Carabajal on bombo legüero. Australia’s best kept musical secret, Sydney rock powerhouse Syndicate’s debut self-titled album is about to hit the streets. Recorded in Los Angeles, the album is jam-packed with iconic rock songs and its release on July 1 will be a history making event for the five-piece. Featuring the likes of Jeff Blue (Linkin Park, Matchbox 20, Korn, Limp Bizkit, The Last Goodnight), Brandon Friesen (Nickelback, Comeback Kid, Sum 41, The Music), Mike Fraser (AC/DC) and Scott Humphrey (Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Andrew WK, The Cult) to name a few, and the producing credentials alone have got the public on the edge of their seats. Syndicate could very much be the legacy of rock in Australia.

Syndicate’s album is all about solid rock ‘n’ roll. It’s no surprise the album has attracted the attention of the best rockers out there either, featuring other rock ‘n’ roll bigwigs like Brent Fitz (Slash, Alice Cooper, Theory of a Deadman), Gil Sharone (Dillinger Escape Plan, Stolen Babies, Puscifer) and Rowan Robertson (Dio) as well as drum legend Matt Sorum to guest on the album.

Heike Has The Giggles is a super catchy heavy pop trio from Ravenna, Italy, formed in September 2006.

Emanuela Drei (lead vocal and guitars) sings mostly like PJ Harvey in raw, fast rock songs wich you can do well with in any (punk) garage. After two demo tapes (”Next, Please” & “How To Giggle”), released in 2007, the band immediately starts to play in huge Festivals (Italia Wave 08 Main Stage and Sziget Festival 2008) and opening for big foreign acts in the biggest italian clubs. They’ve played before the Wombats (Estragon Club - Bologna), GlasVegas (Bronson - Ravenna), Tricky (Vox Club - Modena), Pete & The Pirates (Spazio211 - Torino) or Look See Proof (Casa139 - Milano) performing also a lot of solo shows. The band is also in the line up for Canadian Music Week 09 in Toronto, club Hideout, All 2gether Now Festival in Maschinenhouse, Berlin, SonicVisions Festival in Luxembourg and Eurosonic Noorderslaag in Groningen (Netherlands).

“Sh!”, their debut album, was released on February 2010 for the new indie label Kitano, with a great feedback from audience and specialized press. During 2010 the band performed on other big european stages like Walk The Line Festival (Den Haag NL), Liverpool Sound City, Panoplie Nights (Luxembourg) and supported The Gossip in their show in Bologna, Italy. Winners of the MTV Italy Hit Week Contest, the band had performed a showcase at the Trash Bar, NYC, beside that event.

From the end of this long tour Heike Has The Giggles are locked up in recording sessions to prepare the new album, scheduled for January 2012. In June 2011 Foolica Records released DEAR FEAR, the first single from the new upcoming album.

Diver's music is affective, simple and honest. Emotions are realized powerfully, still quiet, with acoustic instruments and through a variety of different voices. The essence of their music is the contradiction between harmony and their lyrics dealing with insecurity and disorientation. Their songs are swirling around the difficulty to fulfill other people’s expectations, still trying to be true to oneself and about the discrepancy between overwhelming emotions and rational realizations.

School Is Cool brings you adventurous indiepop with bouncing rhytms, that refers to Pixies, Paul Simon, Kate Bush, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, The Dodos and in a way Händel.

After winning Belgium’s biggest rock contest Humo’s Rock Rally 2010 in a very convincing way, this Antwerp-based band played more than 60 festivals in Belgium last summer including Boomtown, Dranouter, Pukkelpop, Crammerock, Pukemarock. Their first single “New Kids In Town” was the summerhit of 2010 (hotshot or highest rotation and 7 weeks number 1 in Belgium’s biggest hit list De Afrekening on Studio Brussels). “In Want Of Something” is the first single of their forthcoming album, which will be released in Belgium on 18th of October 2011 (again hotshot, again highest rotation, and again number 1 in De Afrekening!). The album was recorded at motormusic studios and produced & mixed by Reinhard Vanbergen (member of Das Pop – former productions: The Hickey Underworld, Drums Are For Parades, Goose…). Album is being presented in exclusive avant-premier at one of the main Belgian festivals, Pukkelpop 2011 (Marquee).

Christiania is the much-anticipated second album from Holmfirth-based solo artist Napoleon IIIrd; a compelling tale of small-town life and escaping it's constraints, told over nine tracks of rewired pop, operatic indie and lush, textured instrumental music.

It’s been a busy few years for Napoleon IIIrd. After a sold-out national tour with Mercury Prize nominees and fellow Leeds alumni Wild Beasts, he played at festivals including Bestival, Green Man, End Of The Road, Leeds and Truck, he performed in front of 1,000 people at the palatial Koko in London for Club NME, and he toured Europe widely, ending at Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik. All this while writing and recording the album many consider to be his magnum opus.

Opening track “The Unknown Unknown” was released to fans as a free single on Sept 13th and topped the global Hype Machine charts. The album followed on Nov 8th and was met with rapturous responses in the UK’s mainstream music media.

Since then, Napoleon IIIrd is gearing up release Christiania all across Europe, and playing industry events such as In The City in Manchester and Popkomm Live in Berlin. This most promising UK artist is about to go global.

Backyard (FILM)
Backyard (FILM)

A DIY backyard concert turns into one of the most exciting and intimate music events of the year. With some of the most celebrated bands coming out of Reykjavík right now, including Múm, FM Belfast, Hjaltalín and Sin Fang Bous.

Trailer

A guy named Árni Rúnar had the idea of gathering a few bands together in his backyard to do some live recording. His idea evolved into this film. He filled his little shack of a studio with equipment and prayed for good weather. He invited all of his neighbours and made them pizza, cupcakes and pancakes. And then many of the most exciting Icelandic musicians of their generation showed up to play, giving us a unique look at the diverse music scene of Reykjavík in the summer of 2009.

Axel Concato has the fingers he needs to play several instruments, a voice to charm, a physique to offer him equal pleasure and pain, and a musical talent to get him sought after. Born in Normandy, the town's influence on his music can still be heard today, largely because he's (still) surrounded by many of his childhood friends. He had a happy childhood, effortlessly picking up guitar, keyboard, bass guitar and drums. Possessed by the spirit of rock'n'roll, his musical gift led him to quit Paris for Camden, London, in 2001. Represented by Andy Ross, he was picked up to play keyboards in several supporting acts. In 2003 he toured Texas for the South by South West festival with Country-Punk band the White Russians, expressing the same finesse with which he and Barth (with whom he has recorded two albums) supported The Pretenders. We can't help but mention that after said Pretenders gig Paul McCartney insisted on personally congratulating Axel's keyboard skills. Still on the brink of 2004, Axel formed Axel And The Farmers in London, with English musicians. He went on to play multiple concerts with the band and by the combined grace of his swagger and silhouette, starred as an extra in a number of TV shows and ads...

As defined as in the modern fixture, ‘an old-school songwriter’ and a crowd pleaser. He is able to carry two traits nonchalantly. When you hear him on the electric guitar, he gives you the semblance of old school rockers like Jeff Beck or Mark Knopfler and every time he renders the acoustic guitar, shades of Martin Sexton is evident.

Alex Rintu, this mild mannered individual has an air of calm surrounding him, which camouflages an extremely dexterous musician within. Engage him in a conversation on music and you will see those eyes widen up and there will be spring in his step, which is just an expression of his extreme devotion and determination. An undisguised respect for everything under the sun, he caries this very spirit while rousing up the Indie music scene with his guitar-centric ‘lyrical–blues pop rock’ music.

Mary Ocher was born in Moscow (Russia, former USSR) in 1986 and grew up in Tel Aviv (Israel). She moved to Berlin at the age of 20 and has been playing more or less everywhere in and out of town ever since; both solo and with Mary and The Baby Cheeses.

A true artist whose creativity spans beyond music to filmmaking and drawings, Mary's art reflects her eccentric personality. Her recent album, "War Songs" (2011), is a concept album about what Mary might ironically regard as her favorite subject – war – as well as social status, persecution and hints of nationalism and sexual abuse.

She has recently started working on new songs with garage soul icon, producer King Khan, who described her music as "a mix of Kate Bush, Kim Fowley and Buffy Sainte-Marie". Her style includes various influences, ranging from protest folk songs to theatrical punk, Lo-fi, Brian Eno like experimental music and even psychedelic pop.

Litoral is a name that is bent off of Pau Roca’s worries. The band consists of Iván Cuevas, Javier Monserrat, Manu Moreno, Guillaine Goose and Pablo Magariños; musicians with baggage from different origins and perspectives whom draw, as they say in one of their songs, an ¨electrocardiogram¨ on the map. Doing honor to their name their music coordinately drinks Mediterranean folk.

By using only acoustic instruments each musician is able to mobilize their own instruments. They do not see distance with their public yet cautiously interact with the people as they throw large dosages of positive energy that is felt through smiles and interactive hand clapping.

Their first EP, "1" contains four songs, the first single  “A segle of paisatges” quite easily expresses the groups natural aura. It’s as if Pau’s Spanish guitar leads the percussion which is played with Pablo´s palms to keep a  rhythmic pulse  added with the brushstrokes of Iván's voice. Definitively born music to caress the ears and the spirit, something to be enjoyed in any place of the world as it transports you to an idyllic moderate place such as a special moment by the sea. The ¨El nostre meridià de Greenwich¨ is a beautiful bossa nova song played by a Portuguese guitar, which creates a frank and yet impressive psychedelic effluvia. Tauntingly the EP continues with "Una dona que dorm ", another precious acoustic game of shades and texture that is covered with idyllic images of a beautifully sleeping woman. The EP closes with  "A la vora del mar" a song that begins with an introduction of African percussions and ends to evoke a pleasurable Mancunian pop. Another declaration of the beginning, which is only the beginning and a far way from any end.

"1" has been edited in 12" vinyl and limited edition CD´s which are specially numbered and sewn. The design has been illustrated by Diana Sudyka (known by her works for The Decemberists, Jeff Tweedy and Andrew Bird).

I AM OAK (NETHERLANDS)
I AM OAK (NETHERLANDS)
  • Artist I AM OAK (NETHERLANDS)
  • Speaker

Last year I am Oak’s melancholic folk album ‘On Claws’ received critical acclaim. The band formed around Dutch songwriter Thijs Kuijken have since played over 65 in tours and festivals through the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg and Switzerland.

During this Thijs was also working on a new album called ‘Oasem’, which will be released in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany exactly one year after the release of ‘On Claws’. The slightly darker ‘Oasem’ resembles the overall theme of its predecessors, but musically it might be more removed from the previous album than one would expect. The acoustic backbone that characterized ‘On Claws’ has transformed to one consisting of organs, keyboards and even a balafon.

‘Oasem’ (pronounced like ‘awesome’) is a word in Dutch dialect for ‘breath’. On this album Thijs is cautiously exploring his place in the world by asking questions regarding our relationship to the elements and ancient nature. These questions can become quite overwhelming and confusing at times, but can also encourage new discoveries. ‘Oasem’ is an excerpt from the never-ending search these questions bring about.

Born in 2005, SFEM – THE LADS PRODUCTIONS is an independent Publishing Group and Music Label, active in the production and development of new wave, rock, electronic and alternative rock bands and projects. Since 2007 we have been a dynamic “music factory” where concrete projects and talented artists can find space and help to grow. Nowadays our network operates in Italy and Europe, with a specific focus on the Scandinavian and Northern European music market: the factory manages a few bands (we believe in quality, not in quantity), which are currently touring around Europe and promoting their singles in order to build a strong fan base and to make people talk about them. All products are physically distributed in Italy and Europe by Audioglobe.

UPSIDE DOWN – THE CREATION RECORDS STORY (FILM)
  • Artist LITTLE BARRIE (UK)
  • Speaker

Over a quarter of a century since it began and a decade after it folded, this is the definitive film about Creation Records, one of the world's most successful and colorful independent labels. This is the story of the rock n roll dream and its accompanying nightmares. Millions of sales on both sides of the Atlantic, near bankruptcy, pills, thrills, spats, prats, success, excess, pick me ups, breakdowns and of course some of THE defining music of the late 20th Century. This is the definitive and fully authorised story of the UK's most inspired and dissolute label, from the Jesus & Mary Chain at the Living Room to Oasis at Knebworth.
